After a lot of research, Dana settled on a barrel composting toilet system designed by David Omick.  He has provided complete and accurate instructions for building a zero-water, fully sealed, composting toilet system suitable for full time or occasional use.  All material is contained in a sealed 55 gallon food grade barrel so there is no leakage or ground water contamination.  In our two-barrel setup one barrel is in use and a second is resting (composting).  After each use a handfull of sawdust is tossed into the barrel to add carbon to the high nitrogen mix.  Though our toilets are located in a private location we will be building a small screen around the area with a simple roof for protection from the elements.
